MRT 400 (Recording Majors) - MBS 400 (Music Business Majors) Senior Internship is a required course in which students work full-time for one semester at a cooperating professional music related recording / audio / business location. The internship reflects the course study of the respective majors applied in the 'real world'.

The purpose of the Music Technology and Business Internship Programs is to provide graduating seniors exposure to realistic applications and perspectives in the music industry which are difficult or impossible to gain in classroom and lab settings. It is intended to function as the bridge that allows students to more easily make the transition into a professional working environment. The goals of the Internship Program are as follows:

    * To provide real-world exposure to a particular area of major related interest
    * To provide an atmosphere in which students can apply learned skills
    * To further develop professional as well as interpersonal skills
    * To begin developing the student's network of industry contacts
    * To provide the initial experience necessary for securing a permanent position in the industry

Internship Guidelines

The following Internship Guidelines must be followed. Any deviations cannot be considered without the specific written authorization by the Director of Music Technology or Music Business Programs, given prior to the Internship experience.

When is the Internship taken ?

The Internship may only be undertaken after the student's junior year. The spring semester is recommended for senior recording majors and senior music business majors. It is possible for the internship to be taken during the summer before the senior semester (see below).

Can Internship credits from other institutions count towards the MRT or MBS internship?

As stated, all internships take place after the junior level MRT or MBS classes have been completed. Though credits may be accepted by the college, a minimal internship is still required for the LVC MRT and MBS programs. Transfered internship credits will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis with the internship director as to rather they will count towards the MRT/MBS internship credit requirements.

Can an Internship be taken in the summer ?

The Internship can be taken in the summer after the junior year with the consent of the Internship supervisor and academic advisor (go to summer internship).

If I do my Internship in the summer, when will I receive credit?

The student must register for MRT 400/ MBS 400 for the semester completed to receive credit. Summer internship is registered by the continuing education department. Students will not receive credit for non-pre-authorized internships.

What is the required length of the Internship?

The Internship shall be for a period of fifteen weeks. A minimum of 12 hours per week must be spent during the semester working as assigned. It is expected that regular hours will be kept each week, though it is understood that fluctuations in business will take place; additional hours are strongly encouraged, but not required.

Can the Internship be broken into smaller segments ?

Yes, with the consent of the student's advisor and the Internship supervisor. The Internship can be taken from three to twelve credit hours. The total credit hour specifications must still be met and all papers, journals, and evaluation forms must be turned in for each segment.

Can the intern be paid or be provided benefits ?

    * The Intern is not expected to receive any compensation, and shall be considered a full-time student undertaking studies with the Intern Sponsor. The sponsor shall not be held responsible for Workman's Compensation, Disability Insurance, Unemployment Insurance, and other legal obligations normally assumed for regular employees. The Intern shall provide his or her own accident and health insurance (or use the insurance supplied by the college).
    * Where circumstances are appropriate, the Internship Sponsor may arrange to reimburse the Intern for housing, board, travel, and incidental expenses.
    * If a student is paid for services on a regular basis, the student will be considered to be employed by the sponsor and the sponsor will be responsible for Workman's Compensation, Disability Insurance, Unemployment Insurance, and other legal obligations normally assumed for regular employees. LVC will not be held responsible for stated responsibilities.

Can I use my job as my Internship?

The primary goal of the Internship is to provide students with new experiences in the music industry profession. Generally a current place of employment will not be accepted as an Internship except by consent of the Internship supervisor. If permission is granted, the intern must perform duties substantially different from those required as an employee.

How does the student begin the Internship?

    * The intern must first provide a proposal and discuss the possible locations with the Internship supervisor. The Internship supervisor will not 'place' the student in an Internship location, but may recommend possibilities from a list of previous or new sponsors.
    * It is the responsibility of the student to contact possible sponsors. (E-mail communication with potential sponsors must be precise, business-like, and grammatically correct. Potential internship possibilities have been lost because of sloppy, non-college level E-mails.)
    * All Internship locations must be pre-approved by the Internship advisor before the interview process begins.
    * A resume must be approved by career services and the Internship supervisor before seeking an interview with a sponsor.
    * The student will then solicit for Internship, and interview with the Internship Sponsor.
    * The sponsor must fill out and return the required forms for accepting the student as an intern before the internship begins.
    * Registration for internship requires an add-drop form to be filled out and signed by the advisor. It is then handed to the registrar. Registration can not take place online.

Failure to return required paperwork by stated deadlines will result in loss of grade and possible forced withdrawal from the internship.

How is the Internship graded?

Grading is based on the sponsor evaluations, meeting MRT 400 - MBS 400 requirement deadlines, weekly reports, the journal, and paper. Students should remember that it is the Internship supervisor who will assign the final grade - NOT the location supervisor.

Grade will be based on:

    * Quality of journal
    * Quality of final paper (including grammar)
    * Grade suggestion by sponsor
    * Weekly reports
    * Meeting deadlines (resume, applications, etc.)

After the Internship.

Summer interns are expected to give a presentation about their internship experiences to Fall MRT and MBS survey classes.
